Radon, a colorless, odorless and tasteless gas is believed to cause 12,000 deaths annually and be a contributing factor to cancer development.

Right now, more than 50 percent of the homes tested in pueblo county exceed the Environmental Protection Agency's recommended radon levels. The pueblo west area of the county shows some of the highest readings.

Residents interested in getting a radon test kit can contact the Citizens for Clean Air in Pueblo at 719-252-6258.

A community action group in Pueblo is also currently planning how to spend $280,000 after receiving one of nine national grants from the EPA. The money will be used to fight radon, lead, mold and other airborne chemicals in homes in pueblo county.
