A Colorado Springs man is recovering from minor burns to his hands and smoke inhalation after his mattress caught fire.

Firefighters say the flames broke out Sunday afternoon at an apartment complex on the 1600 block of E. Woodmen Road near Academy Blvd.

When firefighters got there, they say, smoke was coming from a second floor hallway. They say the man who lived in the unit where the fire started, dragged his burning mattress into the hallway.

Officials say the man tried to put the mattress fire out with his hands which is how he received minor burns to his hands. The apartment was also filled with thick black smoke. The man had to be taken to the hospital for minor smoke inhalation as well.

Authorities were able to put the fire out within five minutes. Everyone has since been allowed to return to their apartment. However, the victim's unit is inhabitable due to smoke damage.

Fire officials are still trying to determine what started the fire. Fire investigators are looking to see if cigarettes were involved.
