Hundreds of people around the U.S. have already contracted the H1N1 flu virus and now it appears our pets are at risk too.

There are ten confirmed cases so far. One of the confirmed cases is out of Iowa. A cat there contracted H1N1. Nine ferrets across the country also have the virus.

The concern now is not what our pets can pass on to us, it's what we can give them. "Influenza this year has become a problem both in dogs and people," said Dr. Susan Bloss who is a Veterinarian at Cheyenne Mountain Animal Hospital in Colorado Springs.

Amanda Stokey is a Colorado Springs mother. She has an infant son and two dogs at home. She said the thought of her animals contracting H1N1 makes her worry. "Myself and my husband, we've been vaccinated," said Stokey.

She's now considering vaccinating her dogs too.

"There is a newer canine flu vaccine for high risk dogs," said Dr. Bloss. However, it protects only against the regular dog flu.

As for dogs catching H1N1? "We've seen a cat. We've seen a few ferrets and no dogs have contracted the virus," said Dr. Kristy Pabilonia who works at the CSU Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory.

Dogs, for now, seem to be the least susceptible to catching H1N1. Cats and ferrets, on the other hand, have a much easier time contracting the virus.

Here's something that may put you at ease. There have been zero reported cases of any animal passing any kind of flu, H1N1 or otherwise, to their owners. "You're more of a risk to your pet than your pet being a risk to you," said Dr. Bloss.

Doctors say if you are experiencing flu symptoms, as hard is it may be, try to stay away from your animals so you don't get them sick.

Local veterinarians say if your pets come into contact with other animals consider getting them vaccinated.

I would be careful with all pets because any virus that comes from pigs or birds could be caught by other animals and I suspect dogs could catch it also under the right circumstances.
