School isn't for everyone. Some kids know what they want to do. Maybe they'd rather get hands-on experience in a certain field than taking too many academic classes, like English, History and Math.

Colorado Springs School District 11 already offers different programs for high school students who may want to pursue careers in technical fields, such as automotive, culinary arts and teacher education.

"Some students know what they want to do coming out of high school and we feel like we can provide some opportunities for them while they are here at Wasson," said Sean Dorsey.

Andrew Swonger is one student taking advantage of the opportunity.

"It's great. We spend 90 percent of the time here in the shop," said Swonger.

Swonger says he has known since a young age he wanted to become a mechanic.

"My dad has been a race car driver. We have rebuilt plenty of cars. I figured you know, I should probably get in the engine field," said Swonger.

Wasson High School Principal Sean Dorsey says the district works with area businesses, as well as colleges, to know what kind of students they want coming out of high school.

"Certainly we've tried to offer that kind of student and offer those programs, so they're where they need to be," said Dorsey.

Swonger is on track to graduate in the spring and use the hands-on experience he has gained at Wasson High to pursue his dream of opening his own business.

District 11 is looking into the possibility of opening a community career tech center at the former Irving Middle School. They would need partnerships with area businesses. But, feel its important to offer technical career opportunities to their students.
