Colorado prosecutors say they've filed criminal charges against the parents accused of staging a hoax when they reported their 6-year-old son floated away aboard a helium balloon.
Prosecutors said Thursday that Richard Heene was charged with attempting to influence a public servant, a felony. They charged Mayumi Heene with false reporting to authorities, a misdemeanor.
The father's attorney, David Lane, said Richard and Mayumi Heene would plead guilty to the charges in a plea deal so that the family could stay together.
Prosecutors did not confirm the existence of a plea deal.
In a statement, the Larimer County district attorney's office said that the Heenes have agreed to turn themselves in and are scheduled to appear in court on Friday.

When this story first came out I read peoples comments. The ignorance was everywhere of how they are parents and why would they fake this. Its about time people open their eyes and realize that there are ignorant people everywhere, and people who want attention will do whatever they can to get it, including something as immature as this. I'm glad they are being charged. I hope the kids are put in a safe home. As for the parents, they not only need jail time, counseling, but they need to pay for all the wasted tax payers dollars that was used up in that hoax.
"Fall on my Sword"???? This is obviously a man who still believes he hasnt done anything wrong. Hopefully, if and when this makes it to trial, a jury will come up with the right verdict and teach this self centered attention seeker a lesson. The only reality TV I want to see with him on it is 48 Hours doing a story on it to reveal how much of a fool this guy is. I really hope the wife doesnt get deported. Regardless of the situation at hand, that would be the worst thing to happen to the kids, even if these parents seem to be nuts. I sure hope some family theorpy/counseling is ordered by the court once this is all done and over with.
THEY ARE GUILTY, THERE SHOULD BE NO OTHER PLEA. THEY ALSO SHOULD BE MADE TO PAY FOR ALL CHARGES IN THIS CASE. THEIR ACTIONS WERE INTENTIONAL, THEY MADE THEIR CHOICE--THE CONSEQUENCES ARE--PAY FOR WHAT YOU DID.
