Revenue cuts will force Colorado Springs city employees to take 10 days of unpaid furloughs next year.

The City Council approved the furloughs Monday. They'll save the city about $1.4 million. Police, firefighters and other public safety employees won't be affected.

The council voted against imposing across-the-board pay cuts for city employees. It also voted to keep the jobs of 21 cadets in the police academy as well as two medical squads and a rescue truck for the fire department.

Council members did vote to disconnect some streetlights and not replace some others when they burn out for a savings of $1.2 million. A vendor fee that allows businessmen to retain a percentage of sales taxes they collect will be eliminated for $1.3 million in savings.

The City of Colorado Springs has released a breakdown of the approved budget cuts for the 2010 year. The City of Colorado Springs has released a breakdown of the approved budget cuts for the 2010 year.

As usual, Fire & Police are exempt from any layoff, pay cuts or furlough. So what if they don't get to hire a slew of new people, they operate just fine as it is.
