El Paso County Coroner disputes finding in Audit

The El Paso County Coroner's office says an audit overlooked key details and reached conclusions based on a quick review of the facts.

An attorney for Coroner David Bowerman issued the response to
the audit Thursday, criticizing its methods and conclusions.

Bowerman has been coroner since 1981. Until last year, his
company had a contract to provide autopsies for the county.

The audit was released March 18th, identifying about $44,000 dollars it said Bowerman used to pay the expenses of his private
company.

The county commissioners ordered the audit at a cost of about
$25,000 dollars after a dispute with Bowerman over the cost of
autopsies.

Bowerman had sued for more money to run his department.
