John Owens said goodbye Friday night after 29 years at KKTV.

"John is a local legend," said News Director Liz Haltiwanger, "It's not going to be easy for any of us, but we have to respect what John knows is best for him and his family."

Owens doesn't want to call it a retirement, because he will still be involved with the sports department. But, as he puts it, he's ready to "do what he wants to do, when he wants to do it."

Owens says he feels very confident in colleagues Jesse Kurtz and Josh Earl to carry on the department he's been running for 29 years. Still, for Owens and his colleagues in the sports department, his departure will be emotional.

"John taught me a lot about how to work in television. But more importantly, how to treat people. I learned a great deal in watching how he carried himself with people at KKTV and in our community. He is a great colleague, but an even better friend," said 11 Sports anchor Jesse Kurtz.

Owens says, "To everyone who has been watching me throughout the years, and I know a lot of you grew up with me, I will miss you. Whenever you see me on the street, please, let's talk sports."
