Backyard chickens are coming to Durango -- at least, they could.
The Durango City Council voted 3-2 Tuesday to let people raise chickens within city limits.
The ordinance allows residents to keep up to six hens in a predator-resistant coop. They won't be allowed to keep any roosters older than 6 months.
Councilor Michael Rendon introduced the measure last year. He said it's part of the locally grown food movement.
Director of Planning and Community Development Greg Hoch said the city's ordinance was modeled closely on those of Fort Collins and Ridgway.
