Nine more flu-related deaths have been reported in Colorado, bringing the total number of deaths in our state to 34. Health officials say the H1N1 Virus is to blame. While these numbers were released Wednesday, a Southern Colorado mother is clinging to life. The 22-year-old remains in critical condition at Penrose-St. Francis Hospital.

Kayla Kammrad, a young mother of two, is healthy with no underlying conditions. Right now, doctors are concerned she may not make it.

"She's fighting right now. It's a race for her life,” says Robert Williams, Kayla’s father

“She had a 105 temperature. She was admitted to the Canon City hospital." Then, she was then moved to Penrose in Colorado Springs. Her condition is so critical that her deployed husband in Iraq flew home.

"Your lungs swell and fill with fluid. You can't breathe with those lungs," says Dr. Alan Eid. He says that is what happened to Kayla.

“Honestly, I don't want to scare people, but it's brutal," says Dr. Eid. He believes when it comes to the swine flu, the seriousness of the disease is underestimated.

Her heart stopped Monday night for seven minutes. Kayla's dad says right now, all they can hope for is a miracle. “I'm scared to death, I'm scared to death."

Kay I just read that she is showing signs of improvement and her doctor is optimistic that she might turn a corner. Here is the link to where I read this. It has a short little section about her. http://www.gazette.com/articles/health-66082-vaccine-department.html
