The H1N1 virus has put a Cañon City woman in very critical condition. 22-year-old Kayla Kammrad began showing signs of the illness two weeks ago.

She originally went to St. Thomas More Hospital in Cañon City. When she became more critical, hospital officials decided to send her to the Intensive Care Unit at Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs.

“I’m scared to death, I’m scared to death,” said Robert Williams, Kayla’s father. “Parents aren’t supposed to be sitting there watching their children be this sick.”

Kayla’s father tells 11 News, Kayla's condition is so bad, her heart stopped for 7 minutes last night. Kayla has no underlying conditions, and was a high school athlete. Her husband, who was deployed to Iraq, was flown back home a few days ago to be with her and their two young boys.

The family has set up a fund to help pay for Kayla's medical bills. You can help by donating to the Pueblo Bank and Trust at 1401 Main Street in Cañon City.

I am very happy to say that Kayla is doing better and that the outpouring of support from our community has been amazing. Our cafe does an ongoing Kayla special and people come in and ask what more they can do-and they are complete strangers. The ignorant comments have been seen by the family and it is hateful and unhelpful, thus should be kept to themselves.

I grew up with Jeff and Kayla. And I just heard of this from family in Canon. They are both amazing people and she needs all the help she can get. The Money isn't for them, it is for her parents. They like so many Americans have to be going through hard times. Give as much as you can even if it is a dollar.
