More people will be eligible to receive the H1N1 flu vaccine Saturday in Pueblo.

With nearly 5,000 doses of the vaccine, the Pueblo City-County Health Department is opening the clinic to more than just the initial high-risk population. Now, children 18 years old and younger who are receiving long-term aspirin treatments, healthy children six months to five years old, and health care workers of any age that have direct contact with large numbers of ill patients will have access to the vaccine. They join pregnant women, people who live with or care for infants under six months old, and children six months to 18 years old with a chronic illness.

A clinic to administer the vaccine will be held Saturday, October 31st from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. inside the Event Center at the Colorado State Fairgrounds. The clinic is only open to residents of Pueblo County. Attendees should bring picture identification, and health care workers should also bring medical badges. Officials with the health department are also asking people not to camp out or begin lining up early. They do not anticipate running out of the 5,000 doses early.

"Be ready to wait, but we hope the wait won't be long, and we hope to make it a pleasant experience for the kids that come in and we really encourage them to come in their costumes," said Jody Carrillo Division Director for Disease Prevention and Emergency Preparedness for the Pueblo City-County Health Department.

Again, kids are encouraged to wear their costumes to the clinic, as many volunteers will also be celebrating the holiday. A free bag of candy will be given to children who go through the vaccination process. The candy is being donated by the local Kwanis Club.

This is the last scheduled clinic for Pueblo County. All future clinics will be announced as more vaccines becomes available. Local health officials plan to hold several throughout November and into early December. The next groups to become eligible will be school age children ages five to 18 and college age adults.

"The more vaccine we get, the larger we can expand those risk groups and we'll just be getting more and more vaccine, we hope," said Carrillo.
