The state legislature is considering a proposal to raise the cigarette tax to as much as 70 cents a pack. A House legislative committee will consider the bill that would impose a 50 cent hike.
The money would be used on a range of health care and education programs such as cancer prevention and tobacco education. But to pass, the bill would need voter approval.
