The El Paso County coroner's office has ruled an officer-involved shooting in Monument was a suicide.
Police say 36-year-old William Howell shot himself in the head just after 9:30 Sunday night. It happened in the 17000 block of Park Trail Drive.
Monument police responded to the home for a domestic dispute. They say Howell was out on the lawn, holding a gun, when they arrived. He refused to drop the weapon.
Investigators say that’s when Howell put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. But a Monument police officer heard the shot and saw the flash, and thought he was being fired upon. The officer shot at Howell, striking him in the arm. But the coroner ruled that did not contribute to his death. The officer is now on administrative leave.
Howell's wife was treated for a minor head injury. A 13-year-old boy and two infants inside the home were not hurt.
