Drought Forces Ranchers To Sell

(Calhan-AP) _ Ranchers, no longer able to feed and water their cattle because of the drought, are being forced to sell thousands of head to out-of-state buyers and slaughterhouses.

Bargain hunters from the Midwest are getting some of the state's best breeding stock, which could slow restocking when the drought ends.

The Colorado Cattlemen's Association estimates a million cattle will be sold by this time next year, a third of the state's stock.

The prairies of eastern Colorado usually are a green hue deep into the summer. Now they are brown with exposed scars of dirt.

Only three-point-nine inches of rain have fallen in the Colorado Springs area this year, down from an average of nearly ten inches.
