A piece of military history flew through Colorado Springs Monday.

A Vietnam-era Huey helicopter landed at Air Academy High School Monday morning. The chopper was built in 1965 and deployed to Vietnam in 1966. It served with the 173rd Assault Helicopter Company, known as "The Robin Hoods," before being shot down in 1967.

One of the pilots, Major Bruce Lemoine, says his son once put into words the experience of flying the Huey. “I said 'You know I never asked what you thought bud,’ and he goes, “Dad, how cool would it be to be the acting commander of a time machine and fly it across the country and play the sounds of freedom these guys wanna hear?' That about sums it up, doesn't it?”

Air Academy is among 20 sites the Huey will be traveling to, before going into the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. The military is calling it "the final journey home."
