October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Tuesday on the steps of the State Capitol a Colorado Springs teen shared her story as part of a state rally aimed at stopping Teen Dating Violence.

Tiffany Howard will be speaking all month about what happened back in 2007. That’s when Tiffany's ex-boyfriend gunned down her and her friends in Colorado Springs. One was critically injured, another killed.

"I'd give anything to just be normal again," Tiffany said.

On the steps of the State Capitol Tiffany shared her story publicly for one of the first times.

"My ex-boyfriend of two months chased my four friends and I down in a car. He shot one of my friends and that’s when me and Michael Fisher went to check on him that's when he shot Michael Fisher and assaulted me with his shotgun. Once the cops showed up he turned the gun on himself," Tiffany said.

Her message to others is to watch for warning signs. She says her relationship with her ex-boyfriend A.J. turned violent quickly. Tiffany told us about it last month when she sat down exclusively with 11 News.

"Anytime we would get in fights, I was the reason why we were fighting, it was something about me even if I didn't do anything," Tiffany said.

Tiffany says she still struggles with what happened every day.

"Most people know me as that poor girl from something tragic that happened and lot of people actually blame me for what happened. To this day get death threats and people telling me that I should have died rather than my ex-boyfriend," Tiffany said.

And she isn't alone, last year Colorado lost at least 33 people from domestic violence. Tiffany just hopes by talking about what happened to her, she can save someone else’s life.

Jeremy Vasquez, Tiffany's friend who was shot and critically injured is still recovering, a friend spoke at the capital today on his behalf.

Wednesday Governor Ritter will hold a news conference to sign an executive order establishing a universal policy to protect state employees from workplace and domestic violence.

Tiffany: It is amazing that you are able to tell your story after such a horrible incident. Ignorant people often blame the victim. You did nothing to deserve his treatment of you. I am in the process of writing a book and gathering stories from women who suffered abuse and lived to tell about it. Should you like to include your story, please contact me. I, too, at a very young age was attacked by a boyfriend, forced to marry him, and he, too, put a shotgun to my head one night. I understand. Keep strong, and keep telling your story.

Tiffany, I am proud of you for finding your voice and speaking out against domestic violence. Never let anyone - including your self - tell you that this was your fault. It wasn't. It isn't. I pray that your courage gives courage to others dealing with this horrible crime. Signed, someone who knows...
