(Durango-AP) -- Durango has begun relying on its backup water source, and is asking residents to cut water use by 20 percent.
Public Works Director Jack Rogers says the Animas River is flowing 30 percent below the lowest recorded flows for this time of year in the past 89 years, and the Florida River is almost dry.
Most of Durango's water comes from the Florida River, but for the past month the city has taken most of its water from the Animas River.
The city's last voluntary water restriction was in May 1997 to allow for repairs to a dam, and the last mandatory restriction was 12 years ago.
Residents are asked to observe a lawn-watering schedule. The city already has reduced watering at city parks and buildings and at a golf course and Fort Lewis College.
