The state's gay rights activists and opponents believe homosexual marriages will be a hot button issue in this year's elections.

Both sides say they expect the issue to prompt people to turn out to vote.

The latest census says same-sex partnerships now make up for 11 percent of all Colorado households with unmarried partners.

In the meantime, a resolution supporting an amendment to the constitution bannning gay marriage is on hold in the state legislature.
