(Washington-AP) -- A big recall of possibly contaminated beef has gotten bigger.

The Agriculture Department says the recall now covers 18 million pounds of hamburger that might be contaminated with E-coli bacteria in 21 states.

Agriculture officials say there have been at least 17 confirmed cases of illness in Colorado, one in Wyoming and one in South Dakota.

The recall involves meat from Colorado-based ConAgra Beef Company, and expands a previous recall.

Two weeks ago, ConAgra recalled more than 354,000 pounds of ground beef after a positive E. coli test at a Denver packing house raised concerns.

E. coli can lead to digestive illnesses and even death in humans.

Federal officials say ConAgra is cooperating with them.
