Inmate Death Lawsuit

(Colorado Springs-AP) -- The family of an inmate who died after hanging himself at the Criminal Justice Center in June has filed a claim against El Paso County.

The claim by the family of Douglas Spencer Parrish is the fifth stemming from an inmate death since 1998. It alleges cruel and unusual punishment and that deputies failed to properly monitor someone they knew or should have known was suicidal.

Police arrested the 32-year-old Parrish June fifth for failing to appear in court on charges including driving under the influence, possession of marijuana and driving with a revoked license. He was being held on 800 dollars bond.

He was found hanging in his cell June eleven from a sheet tied to an air vent, and died two days later at Memorial Hospital.
