(Colorado Springs-AP) -- Military planners at Peterson Air Force Base are already busy plotting how to build an all-out defense of the United States.

In anticipation of the launch of the new Northern Command in October, about one hundred people are identifying troops and equipment around the country that would be mobilized for a fight.

The command's main mission is to protect the United States from an outside attack. But it will also need to balance that duty with backing up civilian agencies when needed.

Federal law prohibits the military from acting as police inside U.S. borders.

The Northern Command will be able to step in and help under special circumstances, such as if fighter jets are needed intercept hijacked airliners.
