Chronic Wasting Disease

Updated: Wed 10:29 PM, Aug 07, 2002

(Cheyenne, Wyoming-AP) -- Wyoming wildlife managers are
considering using Colorado and Nebraska's strategy in dealing with
chronic wasting disease in deer and elk.
Tom Thorne of the state Game and Fish Department says the agency
is considering shooting large numbers of deer in areas where the
disease has been identified.
Infection rates for chronic wasting disease in Wyoming's deer
and elk is twice as high as some of the most heavily-infected parts
of Colorado.
But Wyoming hasn't done anything to actively stem the
spread of disease.
Some wildlife experts have termed chronic wasting disease the
most serious wildlife threat of the last century.
Congress will spend more than 32 (M) million dollars over the next two years to help states fight the disease.
