Death Penalty

Death Penalty

The measure brings state law into compliance with a recent U-S
Supreme Court ruling. It replaces the current system in which
three-judge panels determine sentences for convicted killers.
The bill requires a unanimous jury vote to sentence someone to
die. It was sent to Governor Owens, who is expected to sign the
measure before the week is over.
Earlier, lawmakers killed a bill that would have allowed a 10-2
vote to impose the death penalty and another that would have
required juries to determine if there were aggravating factors.
