Colorado Springs police say a suspect stole an SUV, led them on a chase, ran down a motorcycle cop and then stole a second car to make his getaway.
It all started around 10 a.m. Friday as a simple traffic stop for speeding near Uintah and I-25. An officer on a motorcycle tried to make the vehicle stop. But instead, the suspect took off and now faces felony charges.
A neighbor saw part of the chase. "When we got to the corner, across the street we saw a Suzuki trying to dart across the street and the motorcycle cop behind him and you could tell he was trying to get away from the cop."
That's when officer Alan Roman cornered the suspect on a dead-end street. "He saw some kind of opportunity to do something, and when I stopped he made a real hard U-turn and just drove straight into me." Roman was pinned under his bike for a short time but suffered only minor injuries. "A little sore, but I'm fine," he says.
The suspect drove for a few blocks before abandoning his vehicle in a park. Police believe he ran back up a ravine and into the neighborhood. There, he found a car in front of a house, unlocked with the motor running. It was Mary Schouten's car. "I came in to get my coat, my jacket and my Christmas Cards and I went out and my car was gone just a few minutes." Now her only way of getting around is gone. "I had my purse, my check book, everything is in there."
The suspect is described as a white male in his 20s with dirty blonde hair and a mustache. He was wearing a plaid shirt with a turtleneck underneath it. Police believe he got away in a white 1988 Cadillac Seville with Colorado license plate number JLY2215.
