Gov. Bill Owens says he's a prime example why state lawmakers need to crack down on uninsured motorists. Owens was hit from behind by an uninsured motorist 15 years ago, and still suffers from a stiff neck. It was the uninsured motorist's third offense.
On Wednesday, Owens backed legislation that would toughen the penalties for uninsured motorists. The bill would increase the fine for the first offense from the current $100 to $500. The offender's driver's license would also be suspended until evidence of insurance was filed.
A second offense within two years would result in a mandatory fine of $1,000, up from the current $200. Owens says it's unfair for insured motorists to bear the financial burden of scofflaws.
