Two Fort Carson soldiers are dead after a homemade bomb exploded in Iraq.
The Pentagon confirms 21-year-old Sergeant Alexander H. Fuller of Centerville, Massachusetts and 23-year-old Private First Class Michael C. Balsley of Hayward, California were killed Thursday in Baghdad.
They were assigned to Fort Carson's 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division.
Balsley's family had announced his death earlier. As a boy, Balsley talked of becoming a soldier like his father, who served during the Vietnam War.
After the September 11th attacks, Balsley joined the U.S. Army. He most recently served with the Army's 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, based out of Fort Carson.
His family says Balsley died Thursday, after just three months in Iraq, when a Humvee in which he was riding hit a roadside bomb.
Balsley is survived by his wife, Samantha, and a one year old stepson, Logan, who live in Colorado Springs. He is also survived by his 25-year-old brother.
