Since the West Nile Virus was first detected in New York back in 1999, it has spread to 33 states. At this time, there are NO reported cases in Colorado. However, health officials believe it's not a matter of “if” but “when” it will affect the entire country.

So far this year the mosquito-borne illness has killed four people---all of them in Louisiana. Another 88 people are infected with WNV.

West Nile virus is currently found in many areas of the eastern half of the United States. The virus is spread by the bite of an infected mosquito, and can infect people, horses, many types of birds, and some other animals.

Most people who become infected with West Nile virus will have either no symptoms or only mild ones. On rare occasions, infection can result in a severe and sometimes fatal illness known as West Nile encephalitis (an inflammation of the brain). The risk of severe disease is higher for persons 50 years of age and older.

There is no evidence to suggest that West Nile virus can be spread from person to person or from animal to person.
