Teacher of the Year

A Walsenburg language arts teacher who brought more opportunities for students to succeed at John Mall High School is the Teacher of the Year in Colorado for 2004.

Henry McIntosh was named the state's top teacher by the Colorado Department of Education.

He is credited for beginning the Walsenburg schools first Advanced Placement programs offering students a chance to accelerate their studies and earn early college credits.

McIntosh is also a sponsor for the Student Senate, which has raised concerns and suggestions for improving the school, a new dress code and improving attendance.

The other finalists were Janet Judkins, an eighth-grade teacher at Cresthill Middle School in Highlands Ranch; Karol Sacca, who teaches at Roaring Fork High School in Carbondale; and Char Sorensen, a sixth-grade teacher at Vanderhoof Elementary in Arvada.
