New Colorado Laws

A 20-year plan to fund transportation and another to improve education are among 85 new laws that go on the books this week.

They all take effect Wednesday, three months after the end of the regular legislative session. Only bills that have to do with the safety and welfare of the state take effect immediately after they're signed into law.

On the lighter side, the state also has a new law which would eliminate a requirement that whipped butter contain at least 80 percent butter fat.

Another law designates rhodochrosite as the state mineral. The best specimens of the red crystal come from a Park County mine.
