The government says it has reached a $1.5 million settlement with United Airlines over its treatment of passengers with disabilities. But, most of the money went back to United to improve access for the disabled.
The order finds the airline subjected passengers to delay or inconvenience by giving them inadequate help with their wheelchairs. The order has to be approved by the court overseeing United's bankruptcy case.
A Transportation Department statement says the airline will use one million dollars of its penalty to hire special supervisors to oversee wheelchair service at hubs in Chicago, Denver, Washington and San Francisco.
The Transportation Department has assessed penalties of about
$5.8 million against eleven airlines this year for violating the Air Carrier Access Act.
