Thousands of pounds of beef that were returned as part of the Nation's second-largest recall will be cooked and could still end up on kitchen tables.
Greeley-based ConAgra Beef recalled nearly 19 million pounds of beef this summer over concerns the meat was exposed to E-coli.
So far 1,200 pounds of beef affected by the recall have been returned.
The company says returned beef will be cooked and turned into food products for people or pets or it will be turned into nonfood products.
ConAgra spokesman Jim Herlihy says cooking the meat would render any pathogen harmless.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says it is legal for consumers to buy a meal containing recalled meat and federal regulations don't require a company to say whether a product contains recalled meat.
