(Denver-AP) -- The state's Department of Agriculture is changing its policy on chronic wasting disease.
During the past five months, officials automatically euthanized entire herds of elk and deer containing small numbers of infected animals. Now officials are making those decisions on a case-by-case basis.
In one recent case, state officials allowed elk exposed to the fatal brain disease to live. In another, a rancher was allowed to restock his land with hundreds of animals.
Agriculture Commissioner Don Ament says ``there are no perfect answers to these issues.''
The inconsistency is frustrating officials at the Division of Wildlife and wildlife activists. They want to see the department take a more aggressive stance.
