The latest Fort Carson soldier killed in Iraq has been identified as a 24-year-old Kentucky newlywed. Military officials say Corporal Gary Coleman of Pikeville was killed Friday when his vehicle flipped into a canal near Balad. He was trapped inside.
Coleman is the 31st soldier from Fort Carson to die in Iraq. Fort Carson raised the death toll today by including three fallen National Guard soldiers who had mobilized at the post. It is the Army post's heaviest combat casualty toll since Vietnam.
Coleman served with the 3rd Brigade Combat Team. He was a standout on his high school football team in 1996, and he went to Marshall University before enlisting in the Army two years ago.
Coleman had married Kirstin Sinley Coleman only weeks before leaving for Iraq in March. He was expected home for a two-week visit in just a few days.
