(Mesa Verde National Park-AP) -- A fire in Mesa Verde National Park that threatened some archaeological sites was fully contained tonight.
Fire managers say crews will begin demobilizing tomorrow morning. About 43 firefighters will stay to finish mopping up the 2,600 acre blaze.
Crews spent the day dousing hot spots, installing small water dams and scattering tree branches to prevent erosion. About 264 personnel and three helicopters are on scene.
The fire destroyed two employee houses, damaged a water tank and destroyed a sewage treatment plant, power and phone lines.
Parts of the park could be reopened by the end of the week now that the fire is contained.
Park Superintendent Larry Wiese says the park will reopen in stages. It could take weeks to clean up and repair all the damage.
