Four-year-old Ryan Vanloon has been diagnosed with Adrenoleukodystrophy, a devastating genetic disease that can only be cured with a successful bone marrow transplant. His family has just been told his twin sister, Bella, is an exact match.
"I cried, but I was really happy at the same time," says Chrissy Vanloon, Bella and Ryan's mom.
The Vanloons got the news, while in Florida. They had been given a dream vacation to Walt Disney World through the Make a Wish Foundation.
Chrissy Vanloon says it was the vacation of a lifetime, "We got to stay at this amazing Disney themed place, it was a Candyland board. We could have ice cream whenever we wanted. There were characters everywhere. We had train rides to and from the villa that we were staying at. It was really cool, the kids loved it."
Chrissy knew this was the last trip the family would be able to take together for a while. Ryan and his sister Bella will head up to Denver Children's Hospital in the middle of August for the transplant procedure. Ryan will then have to stay up there for six months to heal and recuperate. Chrissy knows there is a rough road ahead.
"This next year is going to be hell," she says.
But Ryan won't survive the ALD without this transplant, so the Vanloons have no choice.
"It's a really good chance that it will work but it is still undocumented as far as how far the kids go. I know that he can go years and years and may have a full healthy life."
The Vanloons still have a long road ahead. The transplant carries the risk of many complications, and it is all very costly.
If you would like to help the Vanloons, they've set up an account to take donations for Ryan's care. You can donate at any Ent Federal Credit Union to the memorial account for Ryan M. Stauffer, account #515269.
