Two men were pulled from the Arkansas River in Pueblo Tuesday afternoon. A 48-year-old man was pulled from the water unconscious, and not breathing. He is in critical condition. A man in his 20's rescued was in good condition.

According to Woody Percival with the Pueblo Fire Department the 48-year-old man was wading in the river near a dam when a strong undertow pulled him under the water. The man in his 20's jumped in the water to help, but was also sucked under.

Both men eventually popped up again, and bystanders were able to pull them from the water. The 48-year-old man was unconscious and not breathing. Rescuers don't know how long he was under the water. Percival says the man was in full respiratory arrest, and rescuers performed CPR. By the time the man was taken to Parkview Hospital he was showing signs of improvement.

No names have been released.

Percival tells 11 News the 48-year-old man was not wearing a Coast Guard approved life vest. According to the Pueblo Fire Department, city law requires anyone who enters the river water to be wearing a life vest.
