Three inmates at Florence's Federal Correctional Institution face second-degree murder charges in the death of an inmate who was beaten with weapons fashioned from padlocks on the end of belts.

Daniel Andres Morones, Jose Augustin Pluma and Juan Martin Ruelas have been charged in the Dec. 29 death of Pablo Zuniga-Garcia.

Pluma pleaded not guilty during a court hearing Thursday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Craig Shaffer. Morones and Pluma are charged with beating Zuniga-Garcia, while Ruelas is accused of being a lookout.

Documents unsealed Wednesday said the beating happened as a result of disrespecting a prison gang, and was meant as punishment.

Morones faces an additional charge of escape for an incident that happened April 9.
