"Playground drug dealer" took on a whole new meaning at a northern Colorado school after a group of fourth graders were busted for dealing pot.

Weld County School District 6 in Greeley says three 10-year-old boys and a 10-year-old girl are in hot water after being caught selling the drug on the Monfort Elementary School campus. The district says only one student admitted to ingesting the drug: a small bite of an edible marijuana item, according to sister station KCNC.

The district says it started Monday when one of the students sold marijuana to several other students. Then Tuesday, another student tried to trade with the original seller: his edible marijuana for the original seller's smokable pot.

The group got caught when another student heard rumors about what was happening on the playground and told a school administrator.

The district says the students got the pot from their grandparents, and those adults appear to have legally purchased the drug. No charges are expected to be filed, but the district is calling for all parents and grandparents of students to treat marijuana as they would alcohol or firearms.

"This drug is potentially lethal to children, and should always be kept under lock and key, away from young people,” the Monfort Elementary principal said in a letter sent home to parents and guardians.

"It was the simple fact that we had adults that didn't secure their marijuana and that sure is concerning because this would have never happened had the marijuana not been so accessible to two 10 year old boys," District 6 Director of Safety John Gates said.

The students are facing unspecified "tough discipline" for their actions.
