Police may say it is warranted, but where is the probable cause? Last I checked the Fourth Amendment is still in effect. I wonder how many innocent citizens were harassed so 17 offenders could be caught; I'd guess hundreds. I want the cops to catch drunk drivers, but not at the cost of our rights.

17 out of 2780? Less than 1%? I understand the want for the checkpoints, but this probably costs the taxpayers thousands of dollars to run. Conservatively guessing 3 of those people were right at the legal limit, how many were actually arrested and charged, thrown in jail overnight? This operation to catch .05% of the people they stopped could have been run on outgoing roads of downtown on a non-holiday weekend and catch at least twice as many in half the time! How many fines did they actually issue for fireworks? Given the 15 or so houses in my neighborhood attempting to catch junk on fire, I bet not a single one, which would have created a nice revenue stream.

I think these stops are unconstitutional and should stop. I think police are going against personal rights way too much nowdays, just watch the "Cops" show on tv. They seem to think that just because somebody looks suspicious, that gives them the right to stop them,demand an id, handcuff and even search them, with no actual evidence until after the search. This is just plain old harassment, and it should stop.
