COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- Colorado Springs police and the State Patrol have stepped up enforcement against drunken drivers during the holiday weekend.
Police say they cited 17 people for driving under the influence from Friday night into early Saturday. Police say the people cited were among the more than 2,780 drivers stopped at a checkpoint on South Powers Boulevard in Colorado Springs.
Police say the enforcement is warranted because the Fourth of July holiday is one of the deadliest when it comes to crashes caused by drunken drivers.
Police will continue the patrols targeting drunken drivers through the weekend.

Hey Pierre, why don't you go back to France where you're used to your rights being violated?
Here is some cheese to go with your whine!
Police may say it is warranted, but where is the probable cause? Last I checked the Fourth Amendment is still in effect. I wonder how many innocent citizens were harassed so 17 offenders could be caught; I'd guess hundreds. I want the cops to catch drunk drivers, but not at the cost of our rights.
