Thursday night a single mother and her children will sleep a little easier, in Pueblo.

Cindy Gomez and her children lost everything when a fire took their rented home Tuesday night on the east side of Pueblo. Since then they've struggled to get by. But, the family's hopes of recovery are beginning to be realized.

The Red Cross has provided some relief, like a room at the Motel 6. Despite this, Gomez was nervous about where she would go, once their stay was up. Preparing for the worst, she clung to the one thing that she says gets her through the day.

"I believe in the Lord, and I have faith that he'll help us out," says Gomez.

A short time later, while at the Red Cross, she talked to her former landlord Kevin Cooter. Cooter's own belief in a high power has him practicing the Golden Rule.

"In the end that's all that really matters, is how we're treating each other. And when things are tricky we have to step up and help each other," says Cooter.

Nothing could epitomize this better than what Cooter did next. The kind-hearted landlord decided to help his former tenant out by renting her another of his properties.

"It's just brick and wood and stone, you know, lives are so much more important than materials," says Cooter.

Now, because of Cooter's understanding, Gomez and her children will once again have a roof over their heads. But, they are not out of the woods completely. Gomez is still struggling to come up with everyday odds and ends, like clothing and furniture on her meager $600 per month fixed income.

Still, Gomez says, with time and faith, they will rebuild their lives.

If you would like to help the Gomez family, a donation account has been set-up through Wells Fargo Bank under the name Cindy Gomez. To donate clothing or other items, we can put you in contact with her. Send me an email for more information.
