Colorado Company Plans to Turn Corn Into Energy

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory plans to develop a refinery process that would use corn as its raw material. DuPont and the lab in Golden have reached a nearly $8 million agreement to study how to turn corn into fuels and other chemicals.

The project would look at using purified sugars from the corn kernel to make chemicals. The rest of the corn plant from stalks to husks would be converted into ethanol and electrical power.

Officials say the project should help reduce U.S. dependence on foreign energy sources while creating new markets for the nation's farmers. DuPont spokesman Anthony Farina says the project is expected to develop a refinery process within four years.
