The federal government has awarded a Longmont company a multi-million-dollar contract to develop a new spy satellite.

DigitalGlobe of Longmont edged out rival Space Imaging of Thornton to win the contract worth more than 500 million dollars.

Officials at the two companies had expected to split the
five-year contract from the National Imagery and Mapping Agency.

DigitalGlobe specializes in high resolution commercial satellite
imagery.

The company will hire 50 people this year to begin working on
the NextView project and another 50 employees over the next few
years.

DigitalGlobe already has 300 workers in Longmont.
