Colorado Springs Utilities and Xcel Energy are increasing rates for gas and electric. C.S.U. customers will see a 15% rise, on average. That's about $20 a month. Xcel customers will see a 73% increase. Those bills will jump an average of $46 a month.

There are a few things you can do at home to help trim your utilities bill. Experts recommend using a "water heater" blanket to insulate the appliance. They also recommend turning town your water heater temperature to 120 degrees. As for your funace, they suggest setting the thermostat back to 68 degrees, and checking your furnace filters once a month.

Experts say you can also save 75% on lighting by changing incandescent bulbs to flourescents. Fluorescents cost twice as much to buy, but save energy on a day-to-day basis.

Finally, be sure to weatherize your home with caulking and weatherstripping around your doors and windows.

Colorado Springs Utilities also offers rebates on investments you make to conserve energy. Call your utilities company to find out if it can offer you any deals.
