11 News has warned you about this scam before. It targets seniors. They receive a call from someone pretending to be their loved one asking for money to get out of trouble.

A Colorado Springs grandma was almost scammed on Tuesday.

Ellen Jones, 96, got a call from someone pretending to be her granddaughter. She told Ellen she had been in a car wreck in Canada and needed money. Jones says when she received the frantic phone call, she was certain the caller was her granddaughter Kristin.

"When she talked she sounded like Kristin," Jones said.

Ellen's supposed granddaughter told her she was in trouble and needed money.

"My granddaughter had been in a wreck in Canada and would need $900 to get out, so I did what a grandmother would do started getting the $900," she said. She went frantically searching for a Western Union.

"She had gone to one of the residents who still has a car and asked her if she could drive her to Western Union. They got that far, but the debit card she was going to use she didn't have the PIN," said Janet Weidner, Executive Director at the PEO Chapter House where Ellen lives. She says they learned later that Ellen was being scammed when some seniors from Manitou Springs came to the chapter house for a meeting.

"Two others had received the call," Weidner said.

Ellen hopes by telling her story she'll save someone from going through what she did. She says not knowing her PIN is the only thing that saved her.

"I could have been $900 short," Jones said.

Ellen was also finally able to contact her granddaughter. She was not in Canada and was not in any trouble.

If you get a call like this where it could be a family member, ask them questions to which only they would know the answer.
