Senator John Kerry apologized Wednesday for a comment that sparked outrage across the country.
Kerry apologized to service members and other Americans offended by his remarks which he maintains were part of a botched joke.
This is the remark made by Senator Kerry that caused people to fume, "You study hard, you do your homework and you make an effort to be smart, you can do well. If you don't, you get stuck in Iraq."
Even though Kerry has apologized, some southern Colorado military families are still upset.
One Pueblo woman, Joanne Jackson, went as far as gathering a rally in protest of Senator Kerry. All were holding signs saying, "John Kerry should resign."
Another woman from Manzanola, Jennifer Vasquez, whose brother was killed in Iraq says, it doesn't matter that Senator Kerry apologized because what he said is already out there.
Vasquez says, "He's making it sound like our soldiers are stupid and that the military is the last resort for those who can't do anything else."
Vasquez says, her younger brother, Staff Sergeant Justin Vasquez was a very bright young man.
Vasquez says, "Military gave you hands on and that's what he wanted to do."
Kerry says he sincerely regrets that his words were, "Misinterpreted to imply anything negative about those in uniform."
Senator Kerry has canceled plans to campaign for fellow democrats and an Iowa democrat, locked in a close race, also canceled his event with Kerry.
