While the race for Colorado's Fifth Congressional District around traditional G-O-P stronghold Colorado Springs was closer than many expected, a new poll suggests Republican Doug Lamborn is pulling away.
With a visit from Vice President Dick Cheney anticipated Friday, a Denver Post poll shows Lamborn is growing a lead over Democrat Jay Fawcett. The latest polls show Lamborn leading Fawcett 47% to 40%. The poll of 400 likely voters has a margin of error of +/- 5%
The race got plenty of attention from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, hoping to swing the district to their side. But Colorado College political science professor says Lamborn may be benefiting from a backlash against all the hype surrounding Democratic gains this election year.
Since it was created in 1972, the district has never gone to a Democrat.
