Fire Ban Sanctions

(Montrose-AP) -- People who violate fire bans will now have to
pay a fine up to one-thousand dollars and spend up to a year in
jail.
The tougher penalty was included in a bill passed by state
lawmakers last week. Today Governor Owens signed it into law during
a visit to Montrose today.
The new law also increases the penalty for people who set
wildfires -- both intentionally and accidentally.
The governor was on the Western Slope to help open the area's
first veteran's cemetery. It's located on 25 acres in Grand
Junction.
