They trained Iraqi security forces for the past year. Now, they’re at Fort Carson. 300 soldiers from the 3rd Heavy Brigade Combat Team arrived at the Mountain Post around noon today. They returned home from their second deployment after spending a year outside of Baghdad.
9-year-old Bethany Grass was just one of the hundreds packed in the Fort Carson gym. She has been patiently waiting and waiting to see her dad for the first time in a year.
As 300 soldiers made their way inside the gym, Bethany cheered, while her eyes scanned the camouflage crowd, hoping she can spot her dad among the troops. Then, the moment Bethany has been waiting for… to be in her dad’s arms again. Sgt. First Class Kirk Grass finally meets up with his family. Bethany cried out, “I haven’t seen him in a year.” Her dad was just happy to be home. "What did I miss ... everything."
An emotional welcome home for a daddy's girl who went a year too long without her daddy.
The rest of the 3rd HBCT is scheduled to come home before Thanksgiving. It's likely this unit will deploy to Iraq again next year.
